FIRESIDE CHAT: Films in early childhood

Samira Jakobi, Lisbeth Juhl Sibbesen, Eveline van Stuijvenberg and Heleen Rouw

Informal discussion about perspectives on the benefits and challenges of using films as an educational tool, the approaches of film and film education from early childhood and if the films are the right medium for this age group.

Samira Jakobi

Samira is part of the film education team of DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum e.V. since 2022 and works on the early education programs for children while also being involved in school education programs. She studied film and media cultural work and worked on film sets and in TV production as a producer. One of her biggest interests in education work is developing education formats for marginalized groups of people and making film as an artform accessible.

Lisbeth Juhl Sibbesen

Lisbeth Arto Juhl Sibbesen is editor of film education at the Danish Film Institute. Her main focus is to qualify film and media education in kindergartens and schools and increase the knowledge of film as an art form. Lisbeth has also developed and facilitated courses in film education throughout Denmark for many years and published articles on film education and film analysis. Lisbeth holds a master's degree in French and Film & Media Science.

Eveline van Stuijvenberg

Eveline van Stuijvenberg grew up watching Krteček on videotapes. After having participated in a video project in secondary school, she wanted to be a camerawoman, but literally collapsed under the weight of old fashioned film cameras. Instead she studied Film and Television Science at Utrecht University and specialised in filmeducation. After a career in film- and media education and teaching in primary and secondary schools, Filmhub Zuid-Holland was founded (2019) and she has been the project manager ever since.

Heleen Rouw

Heleen is an experienced leader in media and entertainment, with a focus on young audiences. She started in the nineties in film distribution at Polygram Filmed Entertainment, Warner Bros and specialized in professionalizing the marketing strategies in order to optimize the audience potential of films. She developed an all round experience in film production, publicity & financing, marketing and development (Dutch Film Fund) but also in corporate communications (public broadcaster merge AVROTROS). She developed a solid fundraising strategy and educational vision at the Amsterdam Royal Zoo as Director Development & Education, before she moved to Cinekid in January 2020.
