MOVED TO DOX: Young and Short: Young jurors teach teachers

Are you a principal, teacher, school psychologist or guidance counsellor at a lower secondary school or high school? Are you interested in what young people think about films and their use in the class? We have prepared a discussion with the members of the Young and Short 2024 Young Film Jury!

Due to technical reasons (temporary power outage at the Kino Kavalírka), the event has been moved to the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art.

What is Young and Short? What films did the Young Jury select for distribution and why? How do the topics affect their lives and why are they important to them? How was the selection of the films done? And why do they think it makes sense to incorporate film and audiovisual education into the curriculum? Antonie Bejčková and David Ployhar for the 12-14 age group and Markéta Frajerová and Lukáš Hladík for the 15-19 age group will talk about all of this with the teachers.

You can see the selected Young and Short films as a part of the Young Film Fest industry programme Young and Short: Screenings for Teachers on 26. 9. 2024 from 4 PM.

ABOUT YOUNG AND SHORT 2024

Young and Short 2024 is a distributive film series that characterises its generation. This spring, young jurors between the ages of 12-14 and 15-19 selected the ten best short films from contemporary European short cinematography for their peers. The selected films have been turned into two film programmes, which offer a diverse excursion into different film genres and creative approaches and reflect themes that are important and actual for the young generation. The films, accompanied by worksheets, can be used by teachers in the classroom to enrich the educational process in a unique way. Young and Short develops young people's critical and aesthetic thinking in an unconventional and entertaining way and gives them the opportunity to inspire each other with their views and attitudes. Find out more about Young and Short here.

Antonie Bejčková

I'm thirteen. That's a lot of years for a cat, but just enough for me to meet and pet as many as possible. I like anything with soft fur, except furry spiders. And most of all, I love the Disman Radio Children's Ensemble, where we create theatre and film. I'm not into serious movies, and I don't find awkward scenes funny. If I had a magic earphone, I could summon a million cats, and that would be enough.

David Ployhar

I come from a filmmaking family, so I've had the opportunity to be an extra in films a few times (Children of Nagano, A Christmas Story, The Last of Aporver). I've also observed filming behind the camera, such as the film The Trap, where I helped with camera equipment on a vintage tram. I took part as a juror in the Young and Short film festival and watched a couple of student films from the film school in Písek for the Třeboň film festival. If I had to choose, I would rather be behind the camera than in front of it. What I enjoy most about films are the stories. I like cartoons, sci-fi and I'm not afraid of action films either. In my spare time I like to edit videos and add music to them.

Anna Dostálová

I'm 19 years old and although I've been fond of culture since I was a kid, I got into films a bit by accident, but I stayed with them. I joined the first semester of Theory and History of Film and Audiovisual Culture at MUNI. I run an online student media - Studentské listy, I participate in the Obnaženi multi-genre festival in my hometown Chomutov. In my free time I like to watch films, read or travel.

Markéta Frajerová

I am 20 years old and I am studying Territorial Studies at FSV UK. As a film lover, I like to educate myself in the field of film studies and I am always looking for a path to follow. I enjoy not only watching films, but more importantly thinking about them and analyzing them. I am also interested in film history. Right now I'm doing an internship at the National Film Archive and outside of that I also like to help out at film festivals.

Lukáš Hladík

I'm 20 years old and this year I'm starting Theatre studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. Besides studying, I also do volunteering, creative writing and I am a member of the Youth Consultation Group of the European Film Club. What fascinates me most about film is that it is a combination of different artistic disciplines that merge into one.
