Waking Up in Silence

Warm sunlight falls on the concrete buildings and children’s laughter echoes between them. Children who were forced to flee Ukraine now live in the barracks of a former Wehrmacht military base. They ride bikes, learn a new language, weave flower wreaths in a meadow and explore empty rooms and hallways of the vast buildings. While playing, they discover old military symbols and tie them to their own experiences and hopes. On the sidewalk, they keep writing: “Putin, stop killing people.”
