The industry programme of the Young Film Fest will take place on 26-27 September 2024 at the Kino Kavalírka in Prague. The two-day programme will brought together teachers and experts from different European countries who have a longstanding experience of working with young audiences and how to effectively integrate film and audiovisual content into education. Inspiring presentations, workshops and interesting meetings.
The first day of the industry program, Teachers for Teachers - The Use of Film In Education, focused on sharing the experiences of teachers who have been working with film systematically and for a long time. The participants met experts from the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic who shared their know-how with you.
Right at the beginning, Remon Klik from the Netherlands, winner of the Film Teacher of the Year award, have spoken. In his presentation, he guided the participants through how to engage the audience from the first minutes of the film and how to build tension using professional film techniques. Another guest was Martin Ganguly, who presented a film education project at the John Lennon Gymnasium in Berlin. In this programme, students discover film history and embark on making short films themselves. Pia Djukic from Germany presented the German platform "Short Film in the Classroom", which makes it easier for teachers to select suitable films for different school subjects. Pia showed how easy it is to integrate a film into the classroom without complicated preparation, even with substitutions.
The afternoon session featured interactive workshops and a parallel workshop with young jurors from the Young and Short project. They discussed what films they have selected for distribution, why their themes are important to them, and how these works influence their view of the world.
Participants interested in how video games can be incorporated into the classroom enjoyed the presentation by Marion Decloitre from Quai10 cinema in Belgium. Marion showed them what educational potential they hold. And to top it off, the day ended with a discussion with investigative journalist Janek Rubeš about online audiovisual production and media manipulation. This discussion focused on how teachers can help their students to spot media manipulation, a valuable skill in today's world.
On the second day of the industry programme, the International Forum for Audiovisual Education looked at Cinekid, the largest film and media festival for children and young people, Quai10, a unique venue in Charleroi, Belgium, where film and video games intertwine, and the work of the Film Education Network in the Netherlands. The Forum also showcased innovative approaches to pre-school film education at the Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum and the Danish Film Institute and presented the agenda of KIDS Regio, a lobbying initiative for quality and diversity in European cinema for children and young people.
The programme also showcased the wide range of film education projects and activities provided by Visegrad institutions. These include the National Film Institute - Film Archive (Hungary), the Andrzej Wajda Centre for Film Culture (Poland), Kino Úsmev (Slovakia), each of which will offered their unique approaches to film education and engagement with young audiences. The Czech organisations were krutón, Centre of documentary film, Aeroschool and Sladovna Písek, which offered their perspective on working with film and film education in the Czech environment.
The forum was followed by a live recording of the Pitch podcast with two great guests. Michal Šašek, Deputy Minister of Culture, together with moderator Martin Jůza discussed contemporary Czech film production for children and youth, audiovisual education and also data collection in the Czech audiovisual environment. Heleen Rouw, director of Cinekid, talked about the specifics of working with children's audiences, what it means to be the biggest children's festival, what challenges it brings and what a quality festival for young audiences should offer or what it should avoid.
The programme is primarily aimed at professionals in the field of audiovisual and audiovisual education.
